Overall Performance and Functions

Husqvarna ST224 Review: A Powerful Snowblower to Defy the Snow

To survive the coming winter, you need a snowblower. If you have a property, you want an efficient way to clean that snow. The Husqvarna ST224 is created for wet, deep, light and soft snow.

The Husqvarna 2-stage snow blower is effective in clearing heavy snow in difficult conditions, however, it has its limitations. There are much more powerful snow blowers on the current market, which are higher rated. Don’t expect it to handle 6 to 12 inches of snow. If you reside in Buffalo, NY, well, you probably want something stronger.

Designed to tackle deep snow in the toughest conditions, the Husqvarna ST224 is a feat of technology as it will power everything you throw at it. The belt’s intake mixes air under the snow so that it is easy to work with and thus ensures efficient clearing. The differential lock ensures that both wheels are driven. Thus, in conjunction with the robust tires, excellent traction is achieved.

The Husqvarna ST224P variant differs from the ST224 in that the latter has a power steering. The possibility of releasing the differential lock and the power steering makes the device extremely maneuverable.

It has X-Trac tires which ensures excellent traction. For use early in the morning, the machine has LED headlights mounted on the side for better illumination.

There are adjustable skids that can be used to regulate the distance between the screw conveyor housing and the floor to avoid damage to the subsurface.

The device has a powerful blower which leads to a particularly large ejection distance. The direction of ejection can be quickly and easily controlled using a lever on the control panel, vertically and horizontally

The handlebar can be individually adjusted for improved ergonomics.

Ease of Use

There are a lot of features on the Husqvarna ST224 that ensure its ease of use. One of these is the heated handles. It might seem like a small feature but in reality, the heated grips are among the best features of this Husqvarna snowthrower.

To start and use the snowblower, do the following:

  • Insert the safety ignition key into the ignition slot until it clicks. Don’t turn the key. Ensure you keep the additional safety ignition key in a place that is safe where it cannot be missing.
  • Place the ON / OFF switch in the ON position.
  • Move the starter controller to the FULL position.
  • Press the primer three times.
  • Connect the power cable to the motor.
  • Plug the power cord to a 3-hole grounded 120-volt AC outlet.
  • Press the machine’s start button until its engine starts.

Engine

The snowblower is powered by a 208cc overhead valve 6.3 horsepower engine. It has a self-propelled drive type with six forward speed levels and one reverse.

Lower speeds are best for heavy snowfall and higher speeds are for lighter snow. If you are new to using a two-stage snow blower, we suggest you start with the lower speeds until you are familiar with how the snowblower works.

The engine can be started electrically with the push of a button via a connection to a socket. This means it doesn’t use a battery to start up.

Power Source

The Husqvarna ST224 uses both electricity and gasoline as its source of power. The engine typically runs on gasoline. The gasoline is stored in a fuel tank with a volume of 0.69 gallons or 2.6 liters.

However, the engine is started with electricity. You have to connect it to a wall socket. So, there’s no need for having or always charging a battery, which is prone to failure, on board.

The downside of the gasoline power source of the machine is the high level of noise. According to the manufacturer, the snowblower has a noise level of 88.4 decibels when measured at the level of the operator’s ears. However, the silencer does its best to reduce noise emissions.

Also, gasoline engines are much more powerful than other types such as the electric. This is why the machine blows with 6.3 horsepower, something which many electric blowers can only dream of.

Stage Type

The Husqvarna ST224 is a two-stage snow blower that is designed to quickly transfer snow. In addition, it is self-propelled, so it is much easier to maneuver in places where you have slopes or hills to cross.

The Husqvarna two-stage snowblower makes use of an auger in collecting snow and an impeller to throw the snow far from the machine, up to 35 feet or 10.7m.

Meanwhile, if you live in an area where snow accumulation is moderate (below 8 inches), we recommend that you purchase a single-stage snow blower such as the Husqvarna ST151. They are designed for light snow clearing, while the Husqvarna ST224 is designed for heavy snow.

Design and Construction

Husqvarna ST224 Review: A Powerful Snowblower to Defy the Snow

The Husqvarna is designed in orange and mainly constructed with plastic. The skid plates are made of hard plastics and so is the blower control console. Generally, it’s a sturdy structure that is built to last.

Dimensions and Weight

The Husqvarna ST224 has a dimension that measures 58.5 by 25 by 43.75 inches. While it’s heavy, weighing 198.6 pounds, the wheel drive makes transporting and snow blowing easy.

Drive

The snowblower is propelled by a pair of heavy tread X-trac tires. The wheels provide extra traction in frost and deep snow. It is exactly like having snow tires in your car.

Clearing Width and Intake Height

The Husqvarna ST224 snowblower is made for heavy snow clearing. It has a clearance width of 24 inches and an intake height of 11.8 inches. The machine can work on a lot of heavy snow within a short time together with its Husqvarna engine. It can throw snow up to 10.7m, allowing you to easily clear quite a large area of snow.

Torque

The gross torque of the Husqvarna ST151 snowblower is around 9.5 lb-ft. Still, this is more powerful than you can get with electric models.

Safety Features

Some of the safety features on the machine which we can mention are the integrated LED lighting for working in the dark. The X-Trac tires also ensure excellent traction, preventing slips.

The differential lock also ensures optimal traction of the drive wheels. The snow thrower also has plastic skids to avoid damage to the subsurface by the machine.

Ease of Maintenance

Maintaining the Husqvarna ST224 is easier than the ST151. At least, there is no battery to keep charged all the time. Also, if the ejection channel becomes clogged, it can be quickly cleared with the cleaning rod.

Go wherever you go, in case the snow sticks to the slide, the slide cleaning tool is the tool to use.

During use, keep the engine tidy and out of the snow. This will help the airflow and extend the life of the engine.

Once the snow blowing is complete, always run the engine for a couple of minutes to melt the ice and snow from the engine.

Warranty

The Husqvarna ST224 comes to the market with a one-year warranty. This is usually what Husqvarna offers its snow-throwing machine users. The ST151 also has a one-year warranty, although many brands offer a lot more.

Price Tag

The Husqvarna ST224 is currently available for under $1000. This is a bargain for a two-stage snowblower. The Husqvarna ST151 which is a one-stage model is sold for around 30% more than the price of the ST224.
