Things to Consider

Our buyer’s guide gives you a complete overview of the specifications you should consider before buying a cordless head trimmer. Take a look at the following buyer’s guide and consider all of the aspects mentioned in this section so that you purchase one that won’t break or run out of battery life at an inconvenient time.

Pros and cons of cordless hedge trimmers

Like any product on the market, cordless hedge trimmers have some advantages and disadvantages when it comes to specs.

  • Pros: The pros of a cordless hedge trimmer are that you can move around an area freely without being restricted by wires. A cordless application is also a portable device so you can travel with your hedge trimmer if you own a gardening service. Since cordless hedge trimmers operate on batteries they’re more environmentally friendly because they don’t emit fumes. Cordless hedge trimmers are lighter and easier to maintain.
  • Cons: Some low-end cordless hedge trimmers have limited power supply especially if they come with faulty batteries. It can be frustrating running out of power in the middle of a trimming task. That’s why it’s important that you select a cordless hedge trimmer that offers longer battery life and fast charging times.

Features to consider while buying the best cordless hedge trimmer

Select a hedge trimmer that has an ideal weight and size. You want an application that’s ergonomically designed so that you don’t struggle to use the device when you’re working in the garden. Purchase a cordless hedge trimmer that’s able to make short work of your gardening duties by considering blade size and teeth spacing.

Battery

When cordless devices were first manufactured most of them were integrated with NiCad batteries but the power supply wasn’t enough to operate the device and it ran out of life too quickly.

But now most cordless tools including hedge trimmers operate on lithium-ion batteries because they offer longer battery life and more power for your tools.

The advantage of lithium-ion batteries is that they are smaller in size and lightweight so it doesn’t add much additional weight to the cordless hedge trimmer.

A standard cordless hedge trimmer battery offers 40 minutes to an hour of life but this all depends on the voltage and charge. You can always purchase a backup battery if you have work to do that may take more than an hour to complete.

If you’re looking for an application for bigger gardening jobs you may want to purchase the Makita XHU02M1 featured on our best cordless hedge trimmer reviews. This application offers over 120 minutes of run time.

Blade type and length

There are two types of hedge trimmer blades to pick from: a single or dual action application.

  • Single action trimmer blade: This type of blade has one edge. The blade moves in continuous motion along the cutting bar.
  • Dual-action trimmer blade: These types of hedge trimmer blades are more popular because they are double-sided. A dual-action trimmer uses two blades at the same time so you can maneuver the application to cut through hedges quicker. The two blades move in different directions so you can trim small trees and shrubs at various angles.

Another important aspect to consider when buying a hedge trimmer is the blade length. It’s better to purchase a trimmer that has a blade width of the same size as your hedges. Longer blades can trim faster but it adds more weight onto the application which can cause arm fatigue.

Measure how big your hedges are and buy a trimmer that is big enough to trim them effectively. By measuring your hedges in comparison to the trimmer you’ll avoid buying a blade that’s too small or large for the job. Typical blade lengths range between 17″ and 23″, even though EGO Power+ 24-Inch and BLACK+DECKER LHT2436 offer 24” blades.

8 Best Cordless Hedge Trimmers - No Limitations

But what about the teeth on the blades? The distance between the teeth will affect the size of the application and the types of trees you can cut with it. Wider teeth trimmers are designed for bigger branches but you’ll also need a more powerful motor in order to cut through the branches.

Many hedge trimmers have a space width of 20mm between the teeth which is ideal to use on smaller trees and shrubs. But if you need to trim larger bushes, look for a hedge trimmer with a wider spacing between the teeth.

SPM

SPM (Strokes per Minute) represents the speed at which the blade is running. The SPM can be faster depending on the motor power and the space between the teeth on the blade. If a hedge trimmer has a higher SPM, it indicates that it’s a more powerful application, like it is by Craftsman CMCHTS820D1.

Noise level

Cordless hedge trimmers produce less noise than electrical powered applications, like it is by Makita XHU02M1 with only 87dB. It’s ideal to purchase a cordless hedge trimmer that has a quiet motor and cutting sound, especially where noise can affect people or pets.

Take a look at Stihl cordless hedge trimmer reviews because they will give you a complete overview of the sound these applications produce. This will give you an idea of which cordless hedge trimmer to purchase if you live in a quiet area.

Weight

The weight of your hedge trimmer should be light enough for you to carry and maneuver. An extra pound or two may not seem like a problem but it can become one when you’re carrying the hedge trimmer for more than an hour.

Smaller hedge trimmers weigh as little as 6lb but larger applications can be 20lb. The weight of your cordless hedge trimmer will also affect the power of the device. Ensure you purchase a hedge trimmer that is a suitable weight for you to carry easily and has the motor capacity to handle your gardening tasks.

Warranty

If your cordless hedge trimmer comes with a longer warranty, chances are it’s a quality device, and that is why we loved EGO Power+ 24-Inch with 5-year warranty and Greenworks 22272 with 4-year warranty. Most high-end cordless hedge trimmers have two warranties: one for the tool and another for the battery.

Before purchasing your cordless hedge trimmer check the warranty period and which parts of the application it covers.

If you want a five-year warranty, opt for any Ryobi cordless hedge trimmer. This is one of the best brands on the market and the manufacturer guarantees product quality assurance. Look at any Ryobi cordless hedge trimmer reviews to find out more about them.

Price

For homeowners or garden service providers on a budget, a cordless hedge trimmer is the application for you. They are quality products with the lowest price range and remember, you don’t have to pay for fuel.

Extra features

8 Best Cordless Hedge Trimmers - No Limitations

Some cordless hedge trimmers come with extra safety features such as a brake to stop the blade from moving in case of an accident. A hedge trimmer brake is automatic and will immediately shut the application down during an accident.

You should also consider purchasing an application that’s weather-resistant, especially if you live in a region that has high humidity and rain. Blades should be made with durable materials that won’t rust over time.

A catcher plate is another common feature on cordless hedge trimmers. This is a piece of plastic attached along the blade to sweep away twigs and debris as you’re cutting.

Cordless hedge trimmer maintenance and safety precautions

Every hedge trimmer should have a handguard as an extra safety precaution. A handguard prevents your fingers from coming into contact with the blade. It’s also useful because it shields your hands from twigs and thorns while you’re cutting.

Maintaining a cordless hedge trimmer is effortless. Simply clean your blade regularly—even after every use—with soapy water. You can also apply lubricant to the blade to prevent corrosion.

Clean out the air filter regularly by removing it and tapping it gently on a hard surface to remove debris.

FAQ

Should I sharpen the blades or change them?

You can sharpen your cordless hedge trimmer blades easily so that you don’t have to replace them. Use a drill with a coned shape stone to sharpen the edges of your blade. But if you don’t have a drilling stone you can use a flat-file for sharpening. If you don’t want to service your hedge trimmer you can always get a professional to do it for you. It’s best to maintain the blade rather than to replace it because this can be costly over time. But if your blade is beyond repair then you should purchase a new one. Ensure you purchase a model that allows you to change the blades easily.

What is the difference between hedge trimmer and hedge cutter?

A hedge cutter is designed for heavy-duty tasks. If trees and shrubs are overgrown with dense branches then a hedge cutter will be more suitable for the job. A hedge trimmer is for smaller cutting tasks for shrubs and hedges with soft branches. Remember that the larger the machine is the more difficult it will be to maneuver. If you’re a beginner, opt for a hedge trimmer and work on smaller tasks around your garden. Once you’re experienced with the activity you can start using hedge cutters.

Do I have to use the batteries that come with a hedge trimmer or can I use another one?

The batteries for cordless hedge trimmers can be replaced, provided they’re the same voltage and size of the previous batteries. The batteries you use for your cordless hedge trimmer must be compatible otherwise it won’t optimize the performance of the tool. All the feedback in our hedge trimmer reviews tells you what type of batteries the tools use and the voltage. Use this as a guide when you want to replace your hedge trimmer batteries.

Our verdict

Now that you’ve read through our best cordless hedge trimmer review and you’ve gone through the buyer’s guide, which one is suitable to use in your garden?

The top cordless hedge trimmer you should consider purchasing is the EGO Power+ which is our editor’s choice because of its lightweight and weather-resistant construction. It’s a dual-action cordless hedge trimmer with a sharp blade that can cut through thicker branches.

But if you’re looking for a better value hedge trimmer we recommend you buy the Greenworks model because of its powerful SPM and adjustable blade positions.

The best budget pick on our list of hedge trimmer reviews is the Ryobi P2606 because it’s ergonomically designed and has a sharp blade that’s easy to maintain.

Which out of the three hedge trimmers did you find have the best features? We hope our hedge trimmer reviews help you pick the best tools for your gardening duties. Remember, it’s always best to keep the garden area neat and tidy to increase your curb appeal.

Hello! Can I use a 20V battery for my 18V Ryobi trimmer so I don’t waste my time when its own battery is recharging?

avatar
Bruce Williams (Site Expert)

Hello, Betty! I wouldn’t recommend that as the batteries are generally incompatible. It will probably work, but you might overheat the control electronics of your cordless hedge trimmer. The battery may end up being “over discharged” and possibly suffer damage. I think, it is not worth the risk. It’s best to use the hedge trimmer’s own battery.

Hello! I have to care for a large garden with really dense hedges in some places (it usually takes about an hour to cut all the thick branches). Dealing with the cord is soooo tiring, so I want a cordless hedge trimmer, and surely I need a powerful one so I have plenty of battery life time to do my work and don’t have to recharge too often. Which model would you recommend?

avatar
Bruce Williams (Site Expert)

Hello, Ava! You may look at our Editor’s Choice, EGO Power+, or another great model, BLACK+DECKER LHT2436. Both these devices have batteries with incredible capacities, lasting up to an hour without recharging, which is exactly what you need, as far as I can see. These models are also very lightweight, being able to cut down even thick branches and hedges smoothly without much effort, due to their 3/4 cut capacity.

Phillip Kett

I own a corded BLACK+DECKER trimmer for many years and I’m quite happy with it. But now I’m thinking of replacing it with a new one, and I’m not sure. Are cordless hege trimmers really worth it? They do look good, but there should be downsides.

Hello, Phillip! Of course, there are some pros and cons of cordless hedge trimmers compared to corded models. The best thing, of course, is that cordless tools can be taken anywhere as they are not limited by extension cords. But this, however, is their main downside – the battery life is limited, so is the time of your work. In addition, cordless models are often heavier and their price is higher than that of corded units.
